Super Mom

A new family calls me with an inquiry about a music class for a two year old.

"Mrs. Xeller, my baby is extremely talented. She could walk, talk and sing as soon as she turned one. She is picking up piano, is able to follow a tune. I have even posted her music videos on Youtube, Facebook, and Musically". When can she start piano lessons?

I simply reply telling the mom how proud she must be to have such a talented child. However, there is time and place for everything. Most students start with early childhood music to learn simple circle songs, bounces and rhymes. Later on, they independently start learning how to carry the beat , explore the pitch, and play an instrument . Individual lessons do not usually start before a child turns five. It depends on multiple factors, such as a hand size, an attention span, pre-reading skills, etc.

Is the social pressure contributing to all us moms for pushing harder than ever?

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!

Our job as moms is to do what is best for our child and provide a bright future by all means. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to compete with media and the picture of a perfect mom, with a perfectly decorated house, perfectly and organically stocked pantry, perfectly dressed children, and perfectly looking mom.

A super mom tries to ensure her child's physical, cultural and social development alongside educational achievement. A super mom is also undergoing many anxieties and stress trying to compete with the social norms.

In my opinion, any mom is a super mom and I emphasize it to all my parents at the seven schools I teach. Not because of what kind of milk is inside her pantry.

A super mom tries her best, but whenever a challenge rises, she is the one battling and executing the final decision.

A dentist advises another x ray, the Super Mom delicately declines knowing the child has had one few months prior. Her child is being recommended for promotion and skip one grade, a Super Mom has the power to refuse and keep the child with the peers at the same grade level valuing social development.

A school psychologist suggests speaking only English as not to confuse the child, it is the Super Mom that decides whether to continue speaking in her mother tongue or not.

The super power of being a mom is to have the power of saying YES or NO.

Super Moms certainly cannot do it all!

However, with all the social pressure on their shoulders and the power of choosing what is right for their child, they remain Super Moms forever and their powers never expire.
